Health insurance for living in Thailand: what to read in the policy

Residence coverage, exclusions, hospital payments and disputes with the insurer.

Official services and forms

OIC insurance complaint route ↗

Ask OIC for an available route if you do not have ThaID.

Match the policy to your actual stay

Check whether the contract covers residence rather than only a short trip: maximum trip length, territory, age, pre-existing conditions, pregnancy and activities. Read deductibles, sublimits and exclusions alongside the overall limit. One visa programme’s insurance requirement is not a universal rule for all foreigners. LTR has category-specific insurance and financial alternatives; check your own route.

Prepare for payment and a dispute

Confirm assistance contacts, admission authorisation, direct billing and claim-document deadlines. Keep the proposal, full policy and written answers about exclusions. If refused, request written reasons and retain records, invoices and correspondence. OIC has an insurance complaint route, but its current portal requires identity verification; ask about an accessible channel if you lack ThaID. An overseas insurer may fall under a different regulator.

Next steps

  1. Check residence duration and policy exclusions.
  2. Confirm direct billing and emergency contacts.
  3. Keep the policy and insurer’s written answers.
  4. Obtain refusal reasons and choose the competent complaint route.
